I have loved Edith Piaf’s song “La Vie en rose” since I first heard the beautiful Audrey Hepburn sing it in “Sabrina”. The title is translated to “Life in Pink” but can also mean “Life in Rosy Hues” or “Life through Rose-Coloured Glasses”
Looking at life through rose-coloured glasses means to look at things with an attitude that things are better than they really are. This is usually seen as a negative thing but I believe it’s a lot better than looking at life worse than it actually is, which is what so many people do these days.
I truly believe we’d all be a lot happier if we did decide to focus on the positive and put on our rose-coloured glasses occasionally. Especially if life is going swell.
Below are 3 ways you can change the way you view life and see just how rosy it truly is.
1. Be Present.
You can’t look at life in rose-coloured glasses if your stuck in your head stressing about the future or dwelling on the past. If you are in your head where the ego has reins then you can’t enjoy the beauty of the present moment, and the present moment is where you experience joy, love and connection. To bring yourself back to the present moment, centre yourself and focus on your breath. Feel the support from the earth under your feet. And remember the present moment is always perfect.
“Pick the day. Enjoy it – to the hilt. The day as it comes. People as they come… The past, I think, has helped me appreciate the present – and I don’t want to spoil any of it by fretting about the future.” Audrey Hepburn
2. Practice Gratitude
Get a gratitude journal and start writing what you’re grateful for. Start with 3 and build yourself up. At first it might be hard but like most things the more you practice the easier it will come. When you look at life with a deep sense of gratitude it’s easy to see just how rosy life is.
“Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.” Alphonse Karr
3. Surround yourself with positive people.
Even a short amount of time with toxic negative people can leave you feeling flat. I truly believe you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Surround yourself with people who share your outlook and beliefs on life. Hang around people who leave you feeling positive, pumped up, and make you feel good. As Oprah Winfrey says “Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher”.
“Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it…” Wilfred Peterson.
